Most of us can’t live without a daily dose of coffee. ☕️ But, does that drink hinder the brightness of the smile it puts on our faces?
HOW DOES COFFEE COLOUR TEETH?
Even though teeth enamel is one of the strongest substances in the human body, it isn’t straight and narrow. On the contrary, it contains microscopically sized dents which can store food and drink particles. Coloured food and drinks, such as coffee, tea, red wine or radish, contain pigments which can stay in those cracks and if certain measures aren’t taken they can cause permanent yellow stains on teeth.
DOES COFFEE COLOUR TEETH LESS IF I DRINK IT WITH MILK?
Although it may seem that a lighter colour of coffee should colour the teeth less, same pigments and acids are present inside coffee with or without milk. So, adding anything to your coffee isn’t going to stop the staining of your teeth from happening, except if you don’t put exponentially less coffee and more milk into your cup.
CAN I PREVENT THE STAINED SMILE?
Yes, if you give up coffee, tea and all other substances that colour teeth. But, we know you are ready to put up with your yellow smile in favour of that wonderful smell in the morning. Instead of abstaining, try to consume coffee during certain breaks in your day, better that then drinking it constantly. After you’ve finished with coffee you can wash your mouth with water or wash your teeth to remove potential yellow pigments from your teeth. Using whitening toothpaste and brushing regularly are both good ways to keep your teeth white at home.
Also, if you have regular check-ups at your dentist, the probability of having spots on your teeth from coffee is way smaller.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY TEETH ARE ALREADY DAMAGED?
If your teeth are already yellow, there is a number of solutions for whitening your teeth. What we don’t recommend is that you whiten your teeth at home, because solutions and acids for teeth whitening can be very dangerous if misused. Don’t buy any teeth whitening product on your own accord.
Nowadays you can do all kinds of teeth whitening, and at Markov Dental Clinic we do three kinds of teeth whitening:
- Whitening by using lasers
- Whitening without using lasers
- Withening at home by using dental splints
TOP 5 MYTHS – BUSTED
Dental care has become this complicated thing from a really simple one. Our minds are fascinating, ready to jump through loops to convince us everything is under control. It is very concerning that we ignore so many signs and that we view myths as truth in order to make it easier for ourselves and to calm our conscience. The thing is, even if you are sure that everything is okay, if the problems are not acknowledged from the beginning they can get worse. Don’t allow your brain to make you stray away from taking care of your teeth.
#1 I DON’T HAVE ANY ROTTEN TEETH, SO THIS MUST MEAN I DON’T HAVE TO GO TO THE DENTIST
Tooth rotting happens painlessly. At first it appears to be the same with teeth infections. Actually, most of dental problems go unnoticed at first. Because of that we recommend that you visit our clinic every six months for regular cleanings and exams. These check-ups allow us to discover early stages of certain dental conditions, before they become serious issues that can cost up to a couple thousand euros. Prevention is key!
#2 I HAVE CHRONICALLY BAD BREATH WHICH MEANS I DON’T BRUSH MY TEETH WELL
Foul breath after eating onion means you haven’t brushed your teeth well. Chronically having bad breath is probably something more serious. Conditions that can cause this are: gum diseases, teeth rotting, teeth infection, and some other conditions in your body such as kidney and liver failure. If your foul breath doesn’t disappear after brushing your teeth it is time to call professionals and get to the bottom of the problem.
#3 MY GUMS NEVER BLED SO THIS MUST MEAN I DON’T HAVE A GUM DISEASE
Gums bleeding signal that we probably have some kind of illness. The other signal that something isn’t right is red gum tissue. Swollen tissue is another one as well. In the earliest stages (when the treatment is the most efficient) it might not be apparent to your eyes. Again, this is the reason why you should go to your dentist at least twice a year.
#Mit 4 CHEWING GUM IS THE SAME AS DENTAL FLOSS
There isn’t a shortcut to good oral health. Do you remember when a study came out and said that chewing gum is almost as efficient as a toothbrush and toothpaste? It isn’t. In fact, it isn’t even close. Gum that doesn’t contain any sugar keeps the teeth clean right after eating but there is a problem: chewing for more than 20 minutes can help bacteria spread all over the mouth. Also, chewing gum can’t remove the remains and plaque underneath the gum line where floss is essential.
#Mit 5 AS LONG AS WE REGULARLY TAKE CARE OF OUR TEETH AT HOME, EVERYTHING IS FINE
Avoiding sugars can help your teeth remain healthy. Cleaning your teeth after every meal can help as well. But none of these things doesn’t leave place for actual dentistry care. Problems with dental health can develop slowly and stay undiscovered even for people with strict brushing and maintenance routines at home. Without professional care there isn’t any way to be sure that your teeth and gums are healthy.Održavanje zuba
